Choosing your Meta-Keywords

Introduction

This article assumes you already know what a meta-tag keyword' is and know a little about their importance to search engines. In this article I will attempt to explain the art of choosing the most appropriate and best performing keywords for your web pages.
As you should already know keywords contained within your websites' meta tags are extremely important in allowing search engines to determine the content of your web pages. In order to make sure that these keywords are bringing your site up within Search Engine Results Pages (SERPS) and driving visitors to your site, the most important factors in determining your keywords are:
  • Relevance.
  • Choosing keywords that people actually search for.
  • Choosing keywords without too much competition.

Relevance

All your keywords should ALWAYS be relevant to the content within the page they describe. Adding keywords to your site just because they are commonly searched for words is not recommended. Not only will it frustrate visitors who are looking for other information, but it may well get your site black-listed from search engine rankings.
Highly relevant keywords will attract visitors who are actually interested in the products and services your website offers. At the end of the day, it is better to attract fewer visitors who actually have an interest in your website than it is to attract more visitors who leave immediately.

Choosing Keywords people search for

Although your keywords should all be relevant, sometimes it is best not to be too specific.
For example, I once discovered a new fossil (honest!), it was new to science so I named it, wrote a paper on it and had it published. I didn't ever build a web page dedicated to it, but if I had the most used keyword and most relevant word would have been the fossils name (Trypanites fosteryeomani). You might therefore think that it would be sensible to use this as one of my most important keywords However, that would (at least to start with) have been wrong. No one else has ever heard of this fossil, so it is very unlikely that anyone would ever type its name into a search engine. And sure enough, a quick check shows that during Dec 2004 there wasn't a single search for this term within a particular, popular search engine.
I would therefore need to be more generic with my choice of keywords. The fossil itself was a trace fossil of a worm from the Jurassic, so keywords/phrases such as fossil', trace fossil' or worm trace fossil' may be more successful.
There are several tools available that allow you to check the number of times a particular word or phrase has been searched for. It is important to choose keywords that are regularly searched for and these tools can help in this decision. It is also worth including common mis-spellings of your most relevant keywords as your competitors may not have thought of this when choosing their keywords.

Choosing keywords without too much competition

The section above may lead you to believe that choosing very generic keywords is your best bet as they are often searched for. However, if you get too generic in your choice of keywords then you will be competing with many more websites for the top spots in the SERPS. If we go back to our fossil example we can see what I mean. A quick search in Google brings up the following numbers of results:
  • Trypanites fosteryeomani 1 result (something I once wrote in a forum!)
  • Jurassic Worm Trace Fossil 4,320 results
  • Trace Fossil 407,000 results
  • Fossil 9,120,000 results
As you would expect, the more generic we get, the more results we get. It can be seen then that choosing the best keywords is a matter of balancing the number of times the keywords are searched for against the number of other sites competing for rankings with those keywords. The best keywords will be those that are searched for often but have few competing sites (assuming the keywords are relevant to your content).
I find that it is best to have a balance between the generic and specific keywords relating to your web page and using key-phrases is a useful way of achieving this. In this way the entire key-phrase can be specific to your particular page, but the individual words within it are fairly generic.
e.g. Affordable Website Design Wales (4 generic keywords to create a specific key-phrase)
To Summarise, choosing keywords is an essential part of producing a successful website. Your keywords need to be highly relevant to the content of your page and specific enough to reduce competition. They also need to contain some generic keywords that are often searched for. As always, the single most important factor is relevancy and good content to go with the keywords.

Kick Start Your Website With Search Engine Optimisation and Getting Indexed

Getting indexed in the search engines is quite a difficult job, leave alone ranking on the first few pages. This is the major challenge that most new websites face as there are many SEOs who do not even wish to begin working on a new website, as they know the challenge is difficult and tough to achieve.

Search Engine Optimisation

Search Engine Optimisation becomes even more important for those, who are about to launch a new website. In such a case SEO should not come to you at a later stage, this should be amongst one of your first priorities. Begin your Search Engine Optimisation practice with an intensive keyword research. Select a bunch of keywords that you feel are most applicable to your website and are popular with the end users too. These keywords are as a matter of fact, the linking bridge between the website and them, through the search engine that acts as a medium.
Once your keyword research is complete, begin building your website content. Content is an important factor when it comes to ranking on the search engines. Hence make sure that your website is carrying good, sufficient and quality content which will be beneficial to the end user. Incorporating your keywords in the website content is also an essential factor of Search Engine Optimisation, as the crawlers will look for relevancy between the keywords and the searched phrase or word, before listing the website in the SERPs.
Website design and layout too plays a role in proper search engine optimisation services. The design of the website should be even throughout the website and should also be simple and easily navigable. Easy navigation helps the search engine spiders to crawl through your website easily and scan every page for relevant content and quality. It is always advisable to put your website in a template format so that it is synchronized throughout the website. Do not forget to add keywords to your title tags and Meta tags so that they appear related to the website content. Do not make your title tags too long, keep the small and shirt at the max to 68 characters.

Website Linking - The Secret Behind Good SEO

The Internet is a "network" of isolated sites joined together by hyperlinks. If no other website ever linked to your site, then no-one would ever know that your website existed.
So links (proper terminology is hyperlinks) are the "glue" that tie websites and therefore the Internet together.
Sure, not all links are of equivalent value. A link on a webpage that is on subject and is genuinely interesting to the reader, plus on a high top-ranking, high visibility website would by nature, pull in more traffic than a link on an webpage that was totally unrelated to your sites topic, or placed in an wrong position of that sites page.
This is a very important rule that a lot of inexperienced Webmaster forget. Web visitors are more likely to click on a link if the text surrounding the link it's related by topic and interesting.
All the major search engines have now started to rank the importance of websites by the number of quality websites that link to it. Gone are the days where the search engines would rank a site based solely on its "on-page" factors (such as keyword density, metatags and the placement of H1 tags etc).
The greater the numbers of links that point to a website the more important the search engines are starting to view that site. But as we have shown above not all links are of equal importance.
Search engines are currently placing greater importance on one-way links than on reciprocal links.
Reciprocal links are made between two or more sites where the webmaster of one sites says "I'll place a link on my site, pointing to your site, if you'll do the same for me". Reciprocal links are great in getting your sites listed quickly in the search engines, but they seem not to have a huge effect on the long-term success rate of a site.
One-way links are unquestionably needed to make a site last for the long term. But getting quality sites to give you a link can be very difficult and exceedingly time consuming.
A tried and tested way of getting quality one-way links is via submitting your website to link directory. Here you submit a site to quality link directories and if your site is accepted, they will give you a one-way link from their quality site. Just the sort of link the search engines are looking for.
The trouble with this approach is that there are almost 3,000 directories out there, let alone the specialized industry based directories. Manually submitting your website to all these directories is almost impossible. Plus, finding the really good ones can take even more time.
The good news is that you will not be the first webmaster to go through this sort of problem. There are semi-automatic submission computer programs out there that can do the job for you. One such application that can help is Directory Link Submitter ( http://www.DirectoryLinkSubmitter.com). This application list over 850 quality link directories and can greatly reduce the time it takes to get your site ranking well in the search engines.
Warning: Stay away from those packages that claim to make the entire process fully automatic. Many of the quality link directories demand a human touch to get you enlisted (this is usually done via requiring the user to enter in a scrambled word or phrase to prove that the submitter is actually a person).
The best types of these submission-aiding programs use automation only to a certain degree and prompt you to fill certain information at other times. This strikes the best balance between speed and proper submittal.

Picking A Web Designer

As an SEO we get two kinds of sites; those that were designed in the past and where the designer is no longer involved, and the sites where the design is either ongoing or we are working with the web designers from the start. Both of these have their pros and cons as an SEO but there is a clear advantage of one over the other for the client.
First, let's discuss the pros and cons to the SEO. If we are coming in after the design is completed there are more than likely (and by that I mean 99.9% likely) some structural and or major design issues that will need to be addressed. Unless the web designer is skilled in SE-friendly design we are going to have our work cut out for us just dealing with structural issues. On the positive side of this scenario, we're left to just work on the site with no designer taking it personally when we tell them we need to make changes (and that can lead to some issues).
Now let's look at the other scenario. Working with a designer has it's cons which is generally – we're going to have a designer taking it personally when we need changes made to the structure of a site or challenging us when we're arguing that while an all-Flash site is visually appealing, it leaves something to be desired from and SEO standpoint. This conversation generally goes something like this (and all you SEO's out there can sing along):
SEO – Flash cannot be properly read in the same way as HTML and we need to have easily spidered content for the search engines to see.
Designer – Flash can be read by Google.
SEO – But not in the same way. We need multiple pages of optimized content and Flash just isn't going to provide that.
Designer – Well I disagree (probably read in some forum somewhere that a misc. guy had no problem ranking for “bob wyverniuschuck artist” with a Flash site) but even if that's true – it's the conversion that counts and this Flash site is going to convert.
SEO – Yes we understand that conversions are important but so is traffic. If we can't get traffic to the site then a 100% conversion ratio is irrelevant.
Designer – There are other ways to get traffic.
SEO - <big sigh> Yes I understand that but this is what the client has hired us to do and has asked that we work together to build an attractive site that ranks well.
Designer – I'm going to have to talk to them about this ...
SEO - <another big sigh in preparation to talk to the client about the fact that you DIDN'T say conversions are irrelevant, etc. etc.>
So this is the down side and an extreme example of it (for humor as much as illustration). But there's a big upside and that comes when you have the opportunity to work with web designers who know how important SEO is (as an SEO who knows how important a good design is). Working to balance the two can be a daunting task and having the skills of the SEO matched with the skills of the web designer can be a true blessing. For example, I may have a great idea to make a site more easily navigated by search engines but an ugly solution to implement it whereas the designer may have a more attractive solution in mind if they know the problem and the technical solution.
Such a scenario has recently come about in our dealings with Moonrise Design. Moonrise contacted us in advance of their starting work for a client, had us sit in on conference calls to understand the client's needs and has since had us helping structure the site properly from the ground up. There is no resistance and we don't tell them what to do, we indicate the functions required – provide any technical background as necessary – and they implement it in a way that leaves the site FAR more attractive than if we had had to do it ourselves. Expert designers doing what they do best and understanding that what we do is SEO and the client wants to rank highly. Ah, it's a beautiful thing.
It is this experience and reflecting back on other web designers we've worked smoothly with in the past that inspired me to write this article. The article is more for potential clients of designers than for the designers themselves. So for those looking for a designer – if you want your site to rank highly and/or you'll be hiring an SEO – here's what to look for.
Picking A Web Designer
There are two main considerations that you'll need to make when you're picking your web designer. The first is, can they build an attractive site and the second is can they build a search engine friendly site?
Building an attractive site:
I am probably the last person to ask about what's attractive and what's not. When the Beanstalk site was up for a redesign a couple years ago I hired a professional web design company to build it. I can't create pretty things but I know how to test and I know how to monitor statistics to see if the traffic is behaving as I would hope.
Here's what to look at:
When you're choosing a designer take a look at their portfolio – put some of their designs past people in your target demographic and see what they think. It's also wise to view the sites of the leaders in your industry to see what they're doing (and maybe even who designed their sites). Just because you like something doesn't mean it's effective to your target market.
You also need to know if your designer is skilled at conversion optimization. Have they read such works as Enquiro's eye tracking studies. Have they done their research (or have you) regarding which colors make people act in which ways? These are extremely important issues to be aware of. If you look at the eye tracking studies - the Beanstalk site places our logo, the Hacker Safe logo and main title in the key zones. We also went with green giving a natural (easy on the eyes) feel that implies wealth and is strongly associated with money. When we changed to our current design the effects were immediately detectable in how our visitors behaved visiting more pages for longer periods of time and, most importantly, increasing our communication with us significantly.
If your designer is not aware of these things do not despair, they may be a fine designer indeed and may have this understanding intuitively (though a little research to back up any intuition is always a sound policy). That said, be aware of the information that is out there and ask questions when you're asked to approve designs.
Building a search engine friendly site:
This is crucially important but probably one of the areas we have to address most frequently. I can't possibly get into all the various areas of search engine friendly design so I'll simply list off a couple of the most common issue we encounter and then provide references to other reading.
Enormous amounts of code on the page. For some reason, even some new designs are coming to us as though they were out of 1998 as far as the page code is concerned. All skilled web designers should have a solid grasp of CSS and should be putting all the main formatting into this file(s). Way too often we're getting sites with dozens of font tags, color tags, size tags, etc. etc. etc. This just gives the search engines a lot more to dig through to find what they want – the content. I'm not even going to get into tables as that opens a whole other can of worms. If your site is table-based (your designer or SEO will be able to tell you this if you don't know) there are some basic practices to insure that the code these tables add is minimized. Unfortunately I can't get into the myriad of different situations this can entail and will have to save it for a future article (so be sure to bookmark our SEO blog to keep up-to-date on that and other developments in the industry).
Bad internal links. You want your internal pages to rank. Most sites will generally target the highest priority phrases on the homepage of the site but the internal pages are the ones that will rank for specific products, services and long tail phrases. To maximize the rankability of the internal pages you need them to be easily found by the spiders and you need to associate these pages with the keywords you're targeting. In short, you need to link to them with text and you need that text to include the keywords. This isn't some deep, dark mystery of SEO and has been well documented and commented on but we've seen tons of instances where internal links are image only or worse, an unspiderable script-based navigation system.
If your designer is using image or script-based navigation for aesthetic reasons that's fine. In fact, it'll likely leave you with a more appealing site visually however you need to make sure your key pages are linked to in the content of you homepage or from text in the footer to insure they get found and spidered quickly and easily.
Over-optimized pages. I love seeing websites that were developed by a web designer who “knows SEO” and has stuffed so many keywords and header tags into the pages that it reads more like an eye chart than sales copy. I can't list all the abuses that exist out there but here's a quick sample of what your page shouldn't read like (and I'll use digital cameras as the example again):
Digital Cameras
Digital cameras are very useful. When you need digital cameras to take digital pictures you'll want to look for our cameras first. Our digital cameras are the best digital cameras you can buy online. So when you want to buy digital cameras online be sure to visit our store and buy digital cameras online from us at the lowest prices.
Can you see what's wrong there? Well so can the search engines. Your pages should read like your writing for a visitor and not a search engine. Yes you need to make sure your keywords get in there (which should be easy since that's what the searchers is looking for information on) but you're not looking to cram them in with a density of 30%. If you can get a density of around 3% and kept the content easily read by your human visitors then you've done well.
I mentioned that I couldn't possibly list all the horrendous issues we've encountered from designers in the past but I also promised to list some other resources you can visit for additional information. Here they are:
If you see your web designer doing one or all of these then know in advance, you or your SEO is going to have some major hurdles to jump through.

Link Building With Articles

There are many different ways that a link can be built. One that is often overlooked but which can have huge rewards is writing and submitting articles. The reason article writing and submission is arguably one of the best of the link building methods is that it not only functions as a link building exercise but also a traffic source. Honestly, can you think of a better use of your online marketing time than a tactic that provides for traffic and which can help improve your search engine visibility? Neither can I.
That being said, simply whipping off an article and putting it up on your site is not going to do it. There are a few crucial steps to making the most of your efforts. It may take a bit longer to do it right but the rewards will be much higher as well. Here are the basic steps to writing an effective article that gets well picked up and can provide you with some solid traffic and links.
Pick A Topic
Picking a topic for your article can often be harder than it sounds. When you're selecting a topic you can't simply write about the first thing that pops into your head. There are two questions you need to ask yourself when you're selecting your topic:
  1. Will the editors care? If the editors of related websites aren't going to care about your topic then it's not going to get published. If it's not going to get published then you can probably find better uses for your time – like golf or shopping for blue widgets online.
  2. Will bloggers care? The second questions is whether other online publishers will be interested in the content. If an editor publishes your content and other link to it, that makes the like to you on the publisher site all the stronger.
Something I've found handy is reading through your FAQ's. If clients and site visitors regularly ask you the same questions, these are likely good topics for your article (though an article on your shipping policies probably won't get picked up too widely). Another great place to start when thinking of a topic to write about is your own brain. Are there questions you've asked that took a ton of time or research to answer? If so – answer the question for others and cover the research and you're likely to get well picked-up.
Write The Article
While picking a topic can be hard, constructing the article can be all the more difficult. An article needs to have a specific point and must provide the reader with a means to understanding why you're making that point.
Let's take this article for example; once I knew I wanted to write an article on how to use article writing as a link building method I knew what the tone would be: instructional. After that it was a matter of deciding what I wanted to cover in the article (picking a topic, writing the article, testing the article and article syndication). After I'm done writing this article I'll have it proof-read by a couple people who aren't involved with our site and then I'll syndicate it in hopes of developing some solid, highly-relevant links and secure some equally relevant traffic.
If I were writing an article on a different topic (choosing a life insurance provider for example) I may divide my article into sections such as: calculating what you need, analyzing the various options, selecting providers, choosing between an insurance company and an insurance broker). Either way you'll want to decide ahead of time what you need to cover. You also need to decide on an article length ahead of time. As a general rule, an article between 1000 and 1200 words is good. Shorter likely won't cover everything and longer tends to lose some people. To this end, I'll move on to part three (testing the article) to keep things conceise.
Testing
Admittedly I don't have a ton to say on this topic. Get people to proof-read your article. Ideally you'll find people from inside and outside your industry to proof the article to make sure it makes sense to experts as well as laymen.
Also, watch the pickup rates on your different articles by searching for it after submission. Pay attention to the types that get picked up and where and focus future articles for the best outcome (whether that's links or traffic or both – you'll have to decide based on the statistics generated by each articles)
Article Syndication
And now for the entire purpose of the article – the syndication. There are two main avenues you can look down (and should) when looking to syndicate your articles. You can find an article syndication service for submissions (very good for a large number of article directories) and you can seek topic-specific sites that will accept your articles.
As I am affiliated with an article syndication company I won't list your options there for fear of a conflict of interest and thus diminish the article. Instead I'll focus on finding specific sites to submit your article to and will assume you will select your own large distribution options.
To find sites to submit your articles to you may need to think outside the box. You'll need to run a number of searches for related phrases that will yield the best results. For example, if I worked for a web design company I might search for places that accept articles that are related to web design, hosting, SEO, small businesses and anything else I could think of. For example, I would begin my search on Google with “web design article submit” and extend it from there.
A helpful tool for this is SEO Quake. If you list your results in sets of 100 you can order them by PageRank or backlinks and go for the higher valued sites first.
Once you've got a solid list you can complete your submissions to it. Don't forget to document your submissions as well as any account information for future reference as you'll likely want to submit another article down the road. Also, you'll want to add a few sites each submission so you've got a constantly evolving list with more and more backlinking domains.
Conclusion
Of course, you'll likely discover more for yourself as you write and syndicate your own articles. Just don't give up the first time and learn from every submission. It may take a bit to figure out what works best but article syndication is one of the single more effective link building tactics available.

Avoid doorway pages in your search engine optimization strategy

Doorway pages are specially optimized pages for one search engine and 1-3 keywords. They are also known as gateway, bridge, entry, jump and supplemental pages. Doorway pages provide higher search engine rankings for any keyword, with any search engine. They are not completely indexed by search engines because of file formats, a chance to achieve a Top 20 position. Doorway pages stand on their own, separate from the rest of the site. These pages usually feature a logo, some text and a link that asks visitors to enter for more information.

Aren’t doorway pages spam?

Doorway pages were given a bad name by webmasters who created thousands of doorway pages with meta refresh tags and invisible keywords. If these spam elements aren’t used, doorway pages are not considered spam.
  • Vary text in your doorway pages.
  • Vary sentences and the size of a page.

How to create effective doorway pages?

To create effective doorway pages, use only 1-3 keywords per page. If you use more, your pages will be diluted and not fully optimized. Pick your three most important keywords and optimize them for Top 10 search engines. Even though you will need statistics for every engine.
Before creating doorway pages, there are guidelines that doorway pages for all engines will follow:
  • Keyword Frequency – This measures the amount of time a keyword is repeated. Keywords repeated
  • Keyword Weight/Density – This is the percentage of keywords in relationship to all the other words. The higher the percentage, the better.
  • Keyword Prominence – Your keywords should come first! Most important keywords should be at the top of the page and in the beginning of a sentence. Never use doorway pages for directories Directories, which use humans to review web sites, don’t enjoy doorway pages. You risk being blacklisted by submitting a doorway page to a directory. Since people don’t need to see your HTML, its optimization is unnecessary.
